German director Michael Hofmann's last movie was Sophiiiie!, a pretty brutal study of a troubled woman about to undergo an abortion. This, by contrast, is a soft-centred affair: sweet, pleasant, and far more obviously commercial. Charlotte Roche is Eden, a woman in a stagnant marriage with a Down's Syndrome child. She meets Gregor (Josef Ostendorf), a brilliant but fat and ugly chef whose delicious creations inspire in her a new passion for life and for her marriage - to the despair of poor Gregor, who nursed the pathetic hope that they might inspire a passion for him personally. The basic premise is not that far from the yucky Lasse Hallström film Chocolat. An amiable, but underpowered and sentimental film.
